Quasi-one-dimensional diffuse laser cooling of atoms

چکیده
We demonstrate experimentally the generation of one-dimensional cold gases $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms by diffuse laser cooling. A horizontal slender vacuum glass tube with a length 105 cm and diameter 2 is used in our experiment. The light inside tube, which generated multireflection injected lasers, cools background vapor atoms. With 250 mW cooling 50 repumping light, an evenly distributed 1-m-long profile atom cloud obtained. observe factor 4 improvement atomic optical density for typical duration 170 ms sub-Doppler temperature 25 $\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{K}$. central number detected remains constant free-fall 30 ms. Such samples are ideal many quantum experiments involving electromagnetically induced transparency, electronically highly excited (Rydberg) atoms, precision measurements.

Laser cooling of atoms
The concept of radiation-pressure cooling of atoms was independently suggested in 1975 for the case of a gas of neutral atoms by Hänsch and Schawlow, and for atomic ions bound in an electromagnetic trap by Wineland and Dehmelt. While the notion that momentum exchange from a photon moving in the opposite direction could slow an individual atom was well understood, until this time no one had come...
متن کاملLaser cooling and trapping of atoms
A review is presented of some of the principal techniques of laser cooling and trapping that have been developed during the past 20 years. Its approach is primarily experimental, but its quantitative descriptions are consistent in notation with most of the theoretical literature. It begins with a simplified introduction to optical forces on atoms, including both cooling and trapping. Then its t...

In 1978, while I was a postdoctoral fellow at MIT, I read a paper by Art Ashkin (1978) in which he described how one might slow down an atomic beam of sodium using the radiation pressure of a laser beam tuned to an atomic resonance. After being slowed, the atoms would be captured in a trap consisting of focused laser beams, with the atomic motion being damped until the temperature of the atoms ...

متن کاملLaser Cooling and Trapping of Neutral Atoms
The ability to cool, manipulate, and trap atoms using laser light has allowed a new, rapidly expanding field to emerge. Current research focuses on improving existing cooling techniques, and the development of cold atoms as a source for applications ranging from atomic clocks to studies of quantum degeneracy. This review explains the basic mechanisms used in laser cooling and trapping, and illu...
